Memory Care Facilities

Memory Care Facilities

moderate to max care

Memory Care Facilities are specifically designed for seniors living with Alzheimer’s or Dementia. These facilities provide a safe, secure and structured environment with set routines to lower stress for seniors experiencing loss of memory at any stage. These communities sometimes exist as a wing in an Assisted Living facility or they operate as a stand-alone residence.

Living spaces can be individual rooms, apartments or shared quarters. Supervision is provided 24 hours per day by trained staff that closely monitor the health of the residents and care for specific needs and demands of Alzheimer’s/ Dementia patients. Because people with dementia are prone to wander (6 in 10 do so, according to the Alzheimer’s Association) memory care facilities have alarmed doors, elevators that require a code, and enclosed outdoor spaces to keep residents on site. Many offer tracking bracelets that give residents the freedom to explore but still allow staff to monitor their location.

Memory care units offer the same services as Assisted Living facilities with increased supervision, plus activities intended to stimulate memory, and possibly slow the disease’s progression. The most common services offered include medication management, assistance with using the bathroom, bathing, dressing, grooming, housekeeping, meals, ( including special meal preparation ) laundry and transportation services. Activities may include music, arts and crafts, games, etc. Staff are typically specially trained to provide the quality care needed for seniors with memory loss. Health Care services are often provided by outside providers.
